Minutes from meeting held on 4/29/2011
Purpose: The purpose of the Mother Baby Wellness Coalition of Pima County is to create collaborative partnerships and improve the health and safety of mothers, babies and families through education. We do this by:
• Ensuring babies are born healthy and raised in a safe and nurturing environment. • Educating and encouraging healthy choices. • Serving as a strong voice for change. • Promoting equal access to quality health care. • Eliminating health disparities among residents of Pima County. • Achieving cultural competence and respecting diversity.
Present: Heather Friedman, Teen Outreach Pregnancy Services (TOPS); Caroline Malkin and Carolyn Matthiasson, Heartsounds; Mother and Infant Care; Michaela Zach, TOPS and NMC; Rosie Dyer
Announcements: Heather: Brought flyers to disperse to group members Carolyn M: Heartsounds’ encouraged us as educators to guide families in labor to turn off their electronics and focus on face to face relations and process at hand. CC Malkin is working to create a Nanny placement agency. Michaela: became a CAPPA Faculty educator for Lactation and is moving to Phoenix. Rosie: Nurse Family Partnership will be expanding the Raising Healthy Kids program which allows for home visits to assist with child development and issues families face as parents. Teri: No Safe Sitter classes this summer unless recruits fall into my hands for instructors. Birth memory Forum had mixed reviews. Ideas discussed were improving communication, working together and encouraging education and expansion of knowledge. Wishes were to be able to carry on discussions with physicians. NMC is creating a task force to work on our nursing staff and the power they have t0o improve birth memories.
Minutes of the March meeting were approved.
Treasurer’s Report: Heather presented for Laura: We had $822.47; we spent $129.40 on flyers. Our final count is $692.97. The basket was not passed and this will be our final count for May’s report.
New Business: The MBWC brochure was dispersed to all present. The brochure is 5.5 inches wide which makes it have a great eye catching appeal but is too wide for the “normal” brochure display holder. Teri will evaluate what Office Max has to offer to hold and display our beautiful brochures.
Presentation: Teri Benitez did a presentation on Domestic Violence and how we all can make a difference in the life of those dealing with emotional, physical or financial abuse. The Power Point will be on the website.
Next Meeting: May 27, 2011, 8:30 – 10 a.m. Speaker will be Charis Ober on NEW Cord Blood donation program. Meetings are held at TOPS: 3024 E. Ft. Lowell Rd. Respectfully submitted, Teri Benitez
