Mother Baby Wellness Coalition of Pima County Minutes from meeting held on 3/25/2011
Purpose: The purpose of the Mother Baby Wellness Coalition of Pima County is to create collaborative partnerships and improve the health and safety of mothers, babies and families through education. We do this by:
• Ensuring babies are born healthy and raised in a safe and nurturing environment. • Educating and encouraging healthy choices. • Serving as a strong voice for change. • Promoting equal access to quality health care. • Eliminating health disparities among residents of Pima County. • Achieving cultural competence and respecting diversity.
Present: Laura Pedersen, and Heather Friedman, Teen Outreach Pregnancy Services (TOPS); Betsy Stunz-Hall, Caroline Malkin and Carolyn Matthiasson, Heartsounds; Mother and Infant Care; Nancy Tepper, Pima County Health Department; Elsa Cocoa, UPH Mobile Health; Renee Palting, UMC; Mary Wachira, So. AZ Breastfeeding Association; Kerrie Green, Healthy Families.
Announcements: Laura: All TOPS staff will be trained by CAPPA to be certified community lactation educators. The new grant-funded research will roll out July 1st. Caroline M: Heartsounds’ 501C3 application is pending. Mary: The La Leche League and SABFA are working together to increase donations to the local milk bank. Carolyn M: Heartsounds will apply to Long Realty for grant monies to support doula services for low-resource mothers who are experiencing perinatal mood disorders.
Minutes of the February meeting were approved.
Treasurer’s Report: As of March 25, there is $822.29 in our bank account.
New Business: The group reviewed the one and two sided options for the MBWCs new brochure. Suggestions were: increase the logo, make the brochure two-sided with a green background, change wording of “diversity” bullet point, delete “your” pregnancy and reduce the size of the baby’s feet photo.
Presentation: Caroline Malkin made a presentation on baby food and infant nutrition. Her PowerPoint is on our website.
