Purpose: The purpose of the Mother Baby Wellness Coalition of Pima County is to create collaborative partnerships and improve the health and safety of mothers, babies and families through education. We do this by:
Ensuring babies are born healthy and raised in a safe and nurturing environment. Educating and encouraging healthy choices. Serving as a strong voice for change. Promoting equal access to quality health care. Eliminating health disparities among residents of Pima County. Achieving cultural competence and respecting diversity.
Present: Teri Benitez, NMC; Laura Pederson, Teen Outreach Pregnancy Services (TOPS); Carolyn Matthiasson, Heartsounds; Mother and Infant Care; Kerrie Green, Healthy Families; Nancy Tepper, Pima County Health Department
Announcements:
Carolyn M: From Heartsounds and Love in bloom shared that Nancy Tepper is now on the Heartsounds board. They are working on a brochure and getting a 5013c status to manage their funds. They just had their 70th birth.
Laura P.: From TOPS discussed 100 car seats she gets from Maricopa for their clients. Also noted school nurses are encouraging families to get waivers from their pediatricians vs. getting their kids vaccinated. Rose from TOPS got her IBCLC and is the 2nd IBCLC on her staff. TOPS has a new development director Debbie Allen.
Kerrie G.: Works for Healthy Families and is working towards her Masters in social work. Discussion was had on federal funds used for home visits from 1st Things 1st.
Teri B.: Works at Northwest Medical Center and shared there are 2 CAPPA trainings coming soon. Certified Lactation Educator in Mesa in January and Certified Childbirth Educator in Tucson in April. Go to website to register.
Nancy Tepper: PCHD mentioned they are between contracts and working to get contract for car seats. She is asking for a training budget for car seat technicians. She also noted more families are not getting their kids vaccinated. PCHD offers a free 4 week childbirth class that is bilingual
Minutes of the October Meeting were approved.
Treasurer’s Report: $720.54 remains in our bank account.
Old Business: Resource list discussion: Updates are complete we just need someone to manage our website. Wenonah Michallet has offered to assist the Mother Baby Wellness coalition with our website and resource list upkeep. More discussions will be had between Laura and Wenonah.
New Business: Discussion had on looking for a new chair person for the coalition and topics for coalition meetings in 2012.
