MOTHER-BABY WELLNESS COALITION Minutes of Jan. 27, 2012 Meeting
Present: Teri Benitez, NWMC; Betsy Stunz, Carolyn Matthiasson, Carol Arnold and Lisa Wright, Heartsounds: Mother and Infant Care; Laura Pedersen and Heather Friedman, Teen Outreach Pregnancy Center; Rosie Dyer, Nurse Family Partnership; Nancy Tepper, Pima County Health Dept.
Announcements: Teri: Asked members to actively recruit speakers for upcoming MBWC meeting. A special speaker is scheduled for Feb. 24. Teri and Rosie will work on identifying a venue, since the topic of newborn hearing may draw a larger audience than usual.
At NWMC, a new breastfeeding support group will meet on Wednesdays at 6. It is free and open to the public (breastfeeding moms and babies). CAPPA training for Childbirth Educators is scheduled for the last week in April. See the CAPPA website for more information. The next Tucson Postpartum Depression Coalition meeting is April 19 and it will include a presentation on adolescent brain development. Lisa: Is the new project manager for the Heartsounds grant to serve low-income families when the mother is experiencing postpartum mood disorders. Heartsounds’ new phone number is 520-260-0225. An update on this project is attached. Nancy: the PCHD is working to better integrate the services offered at the various Public Health Offices. The group discussed the need for adults who work with children to keep up with their inoculations. Carol: Provided postpartum doula services 17 families and 19 newborns last year. Heartsounds needs more doulas, especially Spanish speakers. Rack cards describing the current grant will be available by mid-February. Please see the attached letter from Heartsounds to MBWC members about the critical need for your referrals. Rosie: The Nurse Family Partnership can serve 200 mothers. They now have a waiting list. They will have the first graduate of the program soon. Raising Healthy Kids, for families with other children under the age of five, will be expanding. Laura: Will soon complete her Masters degree and will graduate in July. She is developing an internship bible for Teen Outreach Pregnancy Services for nursing students to improve their internship experience. Teen Outreach continues to expand its services throughout Arizona. Heather: Teen Outreach is starting a scholarship program for teens in high school and college called TOPS Scholars. If MBWC members wish to honor mothers they know for Mother’s Day, they can do so by donating to this fund on the TOPS website www.topsaz.org. They are planning to do a radio ad spot to promote enrollment.
Treasurer’s Report: Laura announced that we currently have $720.61 in the bank. We can use some of these funds for the upcoming special presentation on hearing.
This was followed by a presentation on Sexually Transmitted Infections. The PowerPoint for the presentation will be posted on the MBWC website.
Next meeting: Feb. 24, 8:30 - 10, Child & Family Resources, 2800 E. Broadway Blvd., Tucson
Respectfully submitted, Betsy Stunz
