June 17, 2011 Meeting Minutes


 

Purpose: The purpose of the Mother Baby Wellness Coalition of Pima County is to create collaborative partnerships and improve the health and safety of mothers, babies and families through education. We do this by:

• Ensuring babies are born healthy and raised in a safe and nurturing environment.
• Educating and encouraging healthy choices.
• Serving as a strong voice for change.
• Promoting equal access to quality health care.
• Eliminating health disparities among residents of Pima County.
• Achieving cultural competence and respecting diversity.

Present: Teri Benitez, NMC; Laura Pedersen and Heather Friedman, Teen Outreach Pregnancy Services (TOPS); Betsy Stunz-Hall and Carolyn Matthiasson, Heartsounds; Mother and Infant Care; Nancy Tepper, Pima County Health Department; Erin Torres, WIC; Cathy Nockels-Gonzalez, WIC; Anita Gallardo, U of A Mobile Health.

Announcements:

Teri B.: Still looking for a Childbirth Educator.

Carolyn M.: Continuing work with low income women experiencing PPD.

Erin V.: Introduced herself. She is a peer breastfeeding counselor for WIC.

Cathy N-G: Also a breastfeeding counselor. WIC offers free breast pumps at nine sites in Tucson.

Laura P.: TOPS has new locations in mesa and Chandler. They just completed a three day statewide Personal Success Path training workshop. Two First Things First contracts have been renewed. They are going to open an office in Prescott. They were also funded for primary prevention from March of Dimes. They gained $415,000 in funding.

Oasis is the official name for the new Tucson Postpartum Depression Coalition center at Silverlake and Park. They are looking for volunteers.

TOPS wll be celebrating its 10th anniversary on September 24. Items are needed for their silent auction.

Heather F: TOPS is starting to provide services in Sahuarita. They hope to hold classes in the high school there. They are also teaching “healthy relationships” in middle school.

Anita: Starting July 1st they will have new medical residents working in the Mobile Health Clinic and will be able to serve more clients.

Nancy: There is a new name for the various public health services in the County: Community Health Services.

Minutes of the April meeting were approved.

Treasurer’s Report: As of June 17, there is $693.12 in our bank account. The new brochures have been paid for.

New Business: Teri distributed the current resource list. She has had a volunteer call each agency and update the information. The group agreed to pay someone to input the updated information so that it is correct and more accessible on our website. It will be cleaned up as a word document. Betsy will check for an electronic copy. It will be in one place to receive all comments; Teri’s revisions will be incorporated; a volunteer will make revisions ($10/hour) and the list will be distributed to all. The list should be reviewed yearly in future.

Speakers are needed for Presentations from August 26, 2011 - June 2012. The group is asked to submit possible speakers (and their contact information) to Teri for the following topics: cervical cancer, sexual assault, suicide prevention, Meth Alliance, non-traditional drug use.
